Life's not ALL jazz, swing, tango and air-geetar rock..!! (yep, music to watch the moods go bye..!! ). Just recently I've been back into my classical pieces of Opera, solo pieces and orchestral movements. From Rachmaninov to Sibelius, to Debussey, Puccini, Bach and Mozart. If it fits, matches or lifts the mood, then go with the flow I say..!
It's a real conundrum for 'me' that I cannot play an instrument, yet, I NEED music in my life and I find it in all sorts of places and sounds (doesn't have to be a musical instrument for me, I get so much music on the beach, in the hills and woods around me). Whenever I come in from work, I habitually reach for a CD that just 'feels' right for me, and pop it on whilst going off to grind my coffee beans (noooo, that's not a dance, fella!! ).
I also find some marvellous modern music and movements being composed for as film scores by the likes of Horner, Zimmer, Glennie-Smith and Barry.
Anyway, enough of that, I shall 'try' to attach a few I've been listening to (TOO MANY to list to be honest) and I 'hope' some pieces 'you' might now discover and like too :)

I forgot how much I love Clair de Lune and what a haunting piece it is. It just touches a chord in your soul. Thank you for a lovely way to start my Friday :)
ReplyDeleteYo-Yo Ma has a tango album playing the music of Astor Piazzolla that is wonderful to listen (and dance) to. But I confess that I've been listening to Paris La Belle Époque (another Yo-Yo Ma album) like mad lately, too.
Yo-Yo Jessica!! I'll have to listen to that and see what it's like. I love Astor Piazzolla and also the more electronica new-age Tango music of Gotan Project. (check it out!).

ReplyDeleteActually, just listening to some Cello concertos reminds me of how much I adore this instrument, that is so deep and soulful and just *connects* with my nerve endings, sinews and soul (if that makes any sense...). The sound just seems to penetrate my body, as if my body reverberates with its' sound, almost as if I become a human *reed* channelling the vibrations that this beautiful instrument produces. Amazing how mankind can create such beauty and sound from wood and strings. I'm a very *visual* person (a visual learner), and when I hear the cello, I *see* a hippopotamus or a walrus. To look at it can be misinterpreted as being large and ungainly, yet in water it becomes so graceful and creative and magical. And the deep, warm, throaty bass just wraps me in a protective blanket of woody warmth and security and *feel good* factor. I know!! Paddy missed his meds tonight !! :-)
Waaah!! Just discovered your blog entry and these comments at 21:45, but alas my lousy DSL/dialup connection system is running too slow to hear them. Darn, would have really loved to have heard these, especially today. I'm certain they are all beautiful! Will try again to punch this up at my local library tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing all of this from you Paddy. Thank you for putting all of these up on your blog so that ALL of us here can discover and enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the song! It's just beautiful! And it turns out I do know the Gotan Project - I know their song "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)" but I'll have to listen to more of them now that I know who they are. Re: the link - do you speak Russian, too? You're quite the polyglot, Paddy!
ReplyDeleteNo, you didn't miss your meds - you've captured the reason why I love the cello perfectly.
'tis me careyteaparty, here at the library-
ReplyDeleteBRAVO Sir PADDY!!!! Just listened to all these pieces at the local library. MAGNIFICENT, OUSTANDING!!! Thank you so very much for posting the links here for me to discover today!! I'll be returning to these here often, and go looking for the CDs or Mp3 files to add to my music library!
I confess up front Paddy, that I am not blessed with your gift for expressive writing, but I did want to had to add something about how these pieces affected me:
The Arabesque- I 'saw' flowering swaying in a field, about 2:30 it was an imagining of rain falling.
Mozart's Canzonetta- its ME in a corset and period style gown with my hair all curled and put up, singing this! When the second voice comes in- then its a couple waltzing, the singing voices is the 'sound' of their dance.
The Ravel- my chest was pounding with the sound of this piano piece, resonating deep in my body...especilly at:38 hit me. Fabulous.
Opera, mio babbino caro- the music swells! I 'see' summer in the Italian countryside, enjoying a drowsy late meal (hm.. 11pm?) and a glass of fine white wine sitting at a table under the stars, or under a loggia.
The Claire de Lune- oh my, I cannot share how that one touched me here. Ahem... let's just say the imagery I had of those fingers as they motioned on the piano on this piece of music especially at 1:45 and 3:15, ... on a winter's night, with a lit fire...
Bach Cello Suite- so deep and throaty, like a male voice. I could see historical dancing done to this, by a male dancer in costume, or I am listening to it being performed in a Salon concert in Bath or someplace similar in Blighty as in the film "Persausion(sp?). I'm in a Regency gown there, with my kid gloves and fan, with little jewels woven into my hairstyle.
Steven Sharp Nelson Unacompanied Cello Suite-a completely different feel than the previous Bach cello suite! Oh, tooo sensuous...HOT! the sound of the cello ersonating deep in my chest.. at 1:20 where their is a brief stoo, and then at 2:18 to the resolve at 2:33- tooo heady!! I'm breathless after hearing
I never did say I could type weel, I mean well!! The secret is out... I'm a poor typist! So sorry for the mistakes on my previous post, hope it can still be read and understood Paddy! I was unable to edit and fix all the typos and misspelled words at the library under a time crunch, such as one can at one's own computer...
ReplyDeleteAdd to the mix that my mind and body had turned to mush after hearing all this wonderful music you put up here, my little fingers just could not quickly and efficiently keep up on the keyboard with all that I was feeling, and what was going through my wee little brain...:)
