Currently in York in the UK having just been on a 1930s steam train which took me through the beautiful Yorkshire and Cumbrian countryside to the borders town of Carlisle yesterday .
Half expected a murder on board, but alas no. Cream teas were served in First Class as we chuffed our way up dale and through valleys and across magnificent viaducts. Names like Eden Valley and Wild Boar Fell slipped past on this hazy summer's day with heads out the windows and kids running to the fields to cheer us on.
So if you want to feel like Richard Hanney in 39 Steps or an extra in Brief Encounter, then pack your picnic hamper, don those vintage clothes and Fedora and book yourself a day of nostalgic travel back in time. It truely is a steam powered time machine (for a day!).
Paddy, what an incredible, incredible journey! The countryside is just beautiful and I can't think of a better way to see it. Very spiffy duds there, sir - I bet you were the handsomest fella on that train :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pics, what an terrific adventure Paddy! Looking very dashing in your vintage suit there. Were any other passengers in vintage dress? What were the names on some of the other train cars?
ReplyDeleteOh all the carriages had a name Carey, that one on the photograph happened to be mine. But there was Elizabeth; Jane; Catherine; ..and a few others (all girl's names).
ReplyDeleteI was the 'only' person in vintage dress (in fact the only person in jacket and tie to be honest, other than the Train Stewards!). Most folk were just in jeans, teeshirts, sandals...the usual clobber. Shame really, as it was definitely a day to push the boat out and get ALL dressed up. Anyway, I had a fabulous time and the glorious weather just was a bonus!!
