WELL CERTAINLY in the watch department it does seem to. As modern day watches have seen a growth in size whereby they can dwarf those with spindly wrists. Does this say something about the psyche of the modern male I wonder? Men who drive BIG CARS ..etc are compensating for smaller areas in their life...just speculating!
What I do know is that in the 30's and 40's, there was a fashion for men, REAL MEN ..like Bogart, Grant..etc, to sport a smaller, daintier sized watch that in today's world would be seen as a woman's watch. They were 'generally' pretty small watches!!
I am now the proud owner of a couple of original 30's men's watches, but also one of the more modern 'large' watches (albeit, modelled on a 30's military dive watch of the Italian Navy). What a contrast, and I seem to choose them according to how I feel on the day. Little and LARGE eh!! How fashions change, and I wonder WHY the fashion for larger watches has taken over from the day that men wore smaller time pieces on their wrists, that 'today' might be classed as effeminate.
And yes, I admit that when I wear the BIG WATCH I am over compensating for my smaller parts - I'm MAN ENOUGH to admit it. My feet have always been quite dainty!!
LOL, Paddy! Too funny!
ReplyDeleteI stopped wearing a watch a few years ago. Why? Because the battery stopped on my watch and I was too lazy to go get it fixed. Horrible, isn't it?
I have a lovely Mozart-themed watch that I wore in high school that has an absolutely huge face. I still have it. Maybe I should start wearing it again?
I have a WWII double face vintage ladies nurses watch, our dd has a 30s vintage deco one with tiny sapphires. Both watches ARE VERY small, especially mine. Our ds has a 30s vintage men's watch but as he's just 13-1/2 it still looks a little big for his small wrist. I have indeed noticed that modern mens' watches are pretty large. Paddy your take on this here is very astute! You made me smile and laugh dear! I did find myself some time ago a lovely modern ladies watch that I thought had a "deco" feel, and not too too big - but sadly I lost it!
ReplyDeleteThe vintage watches were so wonderful and quite beautifully detailed. Even with the modern watches being a bigger size- they simply cannot compare or compete with the vintage/deco era/Golden era watches of the past for style and elegance and charm! Remember that Paddy, it can apply about many things male my dear!
Oh I agree with all the above - and what a fun post! :) I especially love the smaller watch on the left - beautiful lines!
ReplyDeleteSir Paddy, size in male parts- ahem...is all relative anyway, my dear. Honest! Remember what Mae West said, "Its not the (size of the) man in your life, its the (size of the)life in the man!
